As Mayor of Scottsdale, the selection process for a permanent city manager is a matter of paramount importance to our city’s future. This decision will shape Scottsdale for years to come, impacting our economic vitality, public safety, quality of life, and the preservation of our unique character. As such, I strongly support the initiation and completion of a nationwide search to identify the most qualified, visionary leader for our community.
The city manager position is not merely administrative, but rather the individual is the driving force behind the execution of our municipal vision, responsible for implementing the policies set by the City Council, overseeing the daily operations of our city, and managing our budget effectively.
This role demands strategic thinking, exceptional communication and listening skills, as well as a profound understanding of our community’s values and aspirations. We need a leader who can navigate complex challenges, foster innovation, and build consensus among our diverse stakeholders.
A national search allows us to cast a wide net to attract the most exceptional applicants. By limiting our search to local candidates, we risk overlooking highly qualified individuals who may bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and a wealth of experience to the position. A well-orchestrated search sends a clear message that Scottsdale is committed to excellence, seeking top quality candidates, regardless of their current location.
A brief look at the multifaceted benefits of a national search
Conducting a national search offers a multitude of benefits that will greatly enhance our selection process:
- Perspectives and experiences: Candidates from different regions bring unique experiences, perspectives, and insights gained from working in unique communities with varying challenges and opportunities.
- Scottsdale deserves best-in-class talent: A national search significantly expands our pool of potential candidates, increasing the likelihood of finding an individual with the specialized skills, expertise, and leadership qualities that align perfectly with Scottsdale’s specific needs and long-term goals.
- A transparent process: A nationwide search demonstrates our commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance, fostering trust and confidence among our residents.
- A need for big ideas and strategic thinking: Scottsdale residents deserve a city manager who can anticipate future challenges and opportunities, develop innovative strategies, and guide our city toward a sustainable and prosperous future.
Scottsdale has unique challenges and needs, a national search is essential
A national search enhances our ability to identify a candidate who shares our vision for Scottsdale’s future and is passionate about preserving our city’s character while fostering high quality growth and innovation. We need a leader who can:
- Preserve and protect our natural environment: Scottsdale’s pristine desert environment is one of our most treasured assets.
- Promote economic growth and prosperity: We need a leader who can attract businesses, support local entrepreneurs, and foster a strong, diversified, and resilient economy that benefits all our residents.
- Enhance public safety and community well-being: The safety and well-being of our residents are of utmost importance.
- Foster community engagement and collaboration: We need a leader who is accessible, responsive, and committed to engaging with our residents, building strong relationships with community organizations, and fostering a collaborative approach to governance.
A national search is an investment worth making for Scottsdale residents
While a national search may require a greater initial investment of time and resources, the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. By investing in a thorough, comprehensive, and inclusive search, we are investing in our city’s prosperity, sustainability, and well-being for generations to come.
Transparency and community engagement are essential to the success of this search process. I hope my colleagues will support slowing the process down in order to complete a thorough nationwide search during which we can keep residents informed about the search, provide opportunities for input, hold public forums to gather feedback and answer questions, and provide regular updates on our city website and through other communication channels.
I urge my fellow residents to support this effort and engage in the process–let’s work together to secure a bright future for our amazing city.
