SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The wind was no match for families at South Dakota Urban Indian Health’s (SDUIH) back-to-school bash on Friday. Sports physicals, vaccinations and raffle drawings were some of the activities participants could get involved with.
“We have an awesome team of medical staff that are doing some just well-child visits today as well as vaccinations. You need those annual vaccinations when you’re heading back to school or just starting school,” SDUIH Communications Director Carly Uthe said.
Vendor booths, like Circle Clinical Research, were another resource families could visit. Lynn Bartholow said this event was not only a great way to get kids and parents excited for the upcoming school year, but also share the importance of clinical trials.
“Patients that are at risk for lung cancer are either current or former smokers, but people that are at risk for lung cancer sometimes don’t get screened. And so, we’re here talking about a clinical trial for a blood test to detect lung cancer,” Lynn Bartholow said.
SDUIH said its mission is to help anyone, and everyone it can.
“One misconception about South Dakota Urban Indian Health is that we only serve Native Americans, and we actually serve anyone and everyone and anyone,” Uthe said.
