BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — The SDSU defense led the Missouri Valley conference in total defense last season, giving up just nine points and 257 yards per game. However, the Jackrabbits will have some holes to fill this season.

Dalys Beanum, Adam Bock, Jarod DePriest, Tucker Large and Cale Reeder are the five returning starters on defense to help lead a group that allowed less than five yards a play.

“Adam Bock, he’s very consistent at D-line. Jarod DePriest has taken another step and was voted a team captain and so he’s kind of carrying that leadership role right now. Reis Kirschenman is a young freshman that’s really dynamic in the pass rush game,” SDSU head coach Jimmy Rogers said.

The unit will have new leaders this season, despite returning several experienced players.

“There are many guys that weren’t technically voted captain last year but were in the room with other captains that did impact them. Dalys Beanum is one of those guys. Tucker Large is voted a team captain. Tucker Large and Mason McCormick grew up together.

“Being in that leader role now, I guess I’d say it feels good. It’s been a long time coming. I’m excited to lead the younger class and uphold the standard of what it is. I’m blessed to be in this position. I never really thought I’d be in this position walking onto this program,” SDSU safety Tucker Large said.

Three of four starters return in the secondary, after holding opponents to just 167yards in the air. But coach Jimmy Rogers says although experience is important, player ability and consistency matters most.

“The secondary stands out on defense for sure, just there’s a lot of returning starters in that group. And what I consider a starter doesn’t just mean starting the game, it’s are they impactful enough to consistently rotate and be a part of the rotation,” coach Rogers said.

SDSU will open the year at nationally ranked Oklahoma State on Saturday. KELOLAND’s Ian Sacks will make the trip and have coverage throughout the weekend.
