On May 10, the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design welcomes members from the Liu Shiming Art Foundation and family to celebrate the establishment of a new graduate scholarship. The school and family are marking the beginning of this relationship with a sculpture donation by the late, Chinese artist Liu Shiming which will stand in the lobby of the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall.
Liu Shiming (1926 – 2010) was a member of Central Academy of Fine Art’s first generation of Chinese sculptors. He grounded his work in a Chinese local context, developing a folk art style within the Chinese tradition through ancient modeling methods. In 2018, the Central Academy of Fine Arts established the Liu Shiming Sculpture Museum, which is dedicated to researching and investigating Liu’s artworks and their art historical meaning.
The Liu Shiming Art Foundation has generously donated to the development of the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design sculpture, ceramics, and textiles programs at Georgia State University with a new scholarship that supports graduate students in the medium. In the coming academic year, Liu Shiming will have a retrospective in the Ernest G. Welch School Galleries.
“This generous donation marks a new chapter in our three-dimensional studio program,” shared Welch Director Joseph Peragine. “Students recruited with this scholarship will carry on the legacy of Liu Shiming whose work has made a lasting impact on the modern, Chinese Sculpture community. We are grateful to be able to share the gift of the artwork with The School of Music in a space where hundreds of College of the Arts events are hosted each year. We look forward to sharing student success stories with the Liu Shiming Art Foundation for years to come.”
