River Cities Public Transit based in Pierre is one of three transit agencies in South Dakota that are getting federal dollars to add propane-powered buses to their fleets.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation will distribute a little more than $1.6 million ($1,615,000) to replace outdated buses that have exceeded their useful life and enable the agencies to meet increased ridership demand.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration has awarded nearly $5 billion in the past three years to replace and modernize transit buses on America’s roadways, with U.S. factories producing more than 4,600 of these new buses. About 80 percent of the buses being funded will run on zero or low emission technology, reducing air pollution and helping meet President Joe Biden’s goal of zero emissions by 2050.
Along with River Cities Public Transit, Prairie Hills Transit and People’s Transit are also receiving funding.
