DES MOINES, Iowa (KCAU) — Millions of dollars in state funding is set to go towards the construction of 175 homes for disaster victims in Iowa, including those affected by recent severe flooding.

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Tuesday that the state has awarded $7.2 million to help build single-family and multi-family homes across eleven projects. The homes are set to be built in cities and communities such as Rock Valley, Spencer and Cherokee.

“Today’s awards are about more than building housing,” Reynolds said in a statement. “They’re about restoring the sense of home that is vital to these disaster-impacted communities. This support will help them begin to heal and find stability once again.”

The awards come through Iowa’s State Disaster Recovery New Housing Grant Program. The program was announced back in July and started with $10 million in financial aid available for counties eligible for FEMA’s Individual Assistance under a presidential disaster declaration.

Applications will be accepted until funds run out or on Dec. 31, 2024, whichever comes first.

Last week, Reynolds also announced that conditional awards were starting to be approved through the state’s Disaster Recovery Housing Assistance Program. These funds cover needs not met by insurance or FEMA. Those eligible could get as much as $50,000 towards the repair or rehabilitation of their home affected by severe flooding.
