A retired Chicago police officer was hospitalized in serious condition after he was shot multiple times in an exchange of gunfire Thursday morning in the Englewood neighborhood.

About 7:30 a.m., a female employee was opening a currency exchange business near 71st Street and Wentworth Avenue when a vehicle approached and three occupants got out, police spokesman Tom Ahern said. The retired officer, who was working security at the business, exchanged gunfire and was shot multiple times.

“The officer’s actions are heroic,” Deputy Chief Fred Melean said at a news conference.

It was not immediately clear who fired the first shot, Ahern said. It is also not yet known if any of the would-be robbers were injured. The employee was shaken but not injured.

The would-be robbers fled in the vehicle, Ahern said.

The retired officer was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition, Ahern said.

No arrests have been made, Ahern said.
