BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — The Renner Royals claimed the Class ‘A’ Legion baseball state championship with an 8-0 shutout victory over Brookings Saturday afternoon.

Post 307 scored three runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. It tacked one an insurance run in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

“It was great getting six runs in the first three innings, really kind of putting our stomping on the game early, put our footprint down and then we can kind of play the ball that we want to play and coast to that end and the final,” Renner head coach Isaac Struck said. “This is a great team win. I’m so proud of these guys.”

Luke Wheeler earned the win and tossed the first 5.2 innings.

Sullivan Schlimgen was named the tournament MVP after going 5-for-12 with seven walks, four runs scored, three stolen bases, two doubles. He posted a .667 on-base percentage over the team’s four games.

“It’s really unbelievable,” Schlimgen said. “When that last out was recorded, it felt like the weight of the world is lifted off our shoulders. To do so with your best friends, that’s something that I can’t even speak of.”

Renner outscored it opponents by 20 runs over the four games at the tournament and now heads to the Central Plains Regional, which begins Wednesday.
