BROAD RIPPLE, Ind. — After more than 20 years in business, Rene’s Bakery Inc is planning to shut its doors to the public.

In an Instagram post, Olivia Trevino, the daughter of the bakery’s owner, announced on Friday that July 13 would be the business’s final day of operation. “Sunday we will be closed,” she stated. “We will most likely be closed indefinitely but I will keep you all updated.”

Since March 12, 2004, Rene’s Bakery has been run by Albert “Rene” Trevino. He planted himself in the Broad Ripple community as the bakery’s sole employee, gradually expanding over time. Rene’s Bakery’s website states that, prior to its closing, the small business retained eight full and part-time employees, as well as a multitude of baked goods for customers to try.

On April 20, 2024, Rene Trevino was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. His daughter notes that while his health declined steadily, his dedication to his bakery remained as strong as ever. “Although he was getting worse, he continued to work out, roll croissants and continue to be his powerhouse self,” she wrote.

Olivia Trevino began a GoFundMe page to help assist with her father’s medical bills. Initially, this fundraiser had a goal of raising $75,000 for Rene Trevino. As of this article’s publication, it stands at $78,150.
