SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Rapid City man was sentenced to life in prison without parole Wednesday for murder.
Brent Kertzman, 65, was sentenced for the first-degree murder of Julie Fisk, 54. In September, Kertzman pleaded guilty to bludgeoning Fisk to death and setting fire to her home on February 20, 2024, after their relationship ended.
Fisk’s children released the following statement:
“We appreciate the hard work and diligence of the litigators, investigators, first responders, and victim advocates who ensured this case moved smoothly. Their efforts have brought us some peace during this process. The love and support of everyone involved are deeply felt and greatly appreciated. Our mother’s memory remains strong, and we sincerely hope that anyone in a similar situation reaches out and seeks help.”
Last month, after speaking with the victim’s family, the State agreed not to pursue the death penalty in exchange for Kertzman’s guilty plea to first-degree murder.
Pennington County State’s Attorney Lara Roetzel said that while the State was fully prepared to seek the death penalty, the family’s desire for closure and their wish to avoid the trauma of trial was pivotal to reaching this agreement.
