While #Indianapolis failed to hit 80° Wednesday, several spots added another late-season 80° day. Shelbyville got to 82° and even Eagle Creek on Indy’s northwest side hit 81°. Thanks to an approaching cold front, temperatures look to slowly dip with a needed rain chance just in time for Halloween. But trick-or-treaters should not fret, as most of the rain looks to get out of here before then.
Needed rain on Halloween, improvements for Trick-or-Treating
Needed rain to cap off this very dry October is on tap for Halloween. It peaks in the morning and early afternoon. Then, it steadily decreases in coverage toward the early evening. This is GOOD news for Trick-or-Treating! It will be breezy and the grounds will be wet, but no widespread rain will put a damper on the festivities. Don’t anticipate much rain with this, but enough to help add to our dry month.
Halloween Climatology
Halloween 2024 will mark the third consecutive holiday with rain. It will join a group of 74 other Halloweens where it rained since 1871. It was only 11 years ago when 2.01″ of rain occurred when a late-season storm brought the threat of tornadoes and cancelation of trick-or-treating that year. It will also mark ten years since the Circle City last had measurable snow on Halloween, something which has only occurred twice.
Halloween 2024 will be among some of the warmest for the holiday, too. The forecast high of 71° would make Thursday the warmest Halloween in 16 years. If this occurs, it would join a small percentage of Halloweens with recorded highs in the 70s (26 times since 1871).
November starts nice, more rain for Election Day
Lots of sun will be the story to welcome November on Friday with highs around 60°. Saturday will also be a great day with more sunshine and highs in the mid-to-upper 60s. Then as we fall back Sunday, that’s when our next rain chance arrives. We’ll continue those chances into next week and Election Day Tuesday. The potent system will also come with warmer temperatures, more moisture in our atmosphere which could give us needed rainfall potential for early next week.
