Sheriff Joe Lombardo being a candidate for governor brings to mind what happened to my husband a few years ago. He was taking his morning walk on Maryland Parkway when an intoxicated driver drove up on the sidewalk, hitting him and another man. He was critically injured and the other man killed.
What makes even more tragic and unbelievable was that two days prior, the intoxicated driver ran into the back of a truck a short distance from the same place. Several calls were made to 911 as she had been swerving, running into the median and jumping curbs. Witnesses said she smelled of alcohol.
Metro arrived and detained the driver for 90 minutes, then gave her keys back and allowed her to drive away. Witnesses were appalled she was not arrested. They and our family felt the terrible accident might not have happened if the police had held her.
The decedent’s family was so distraught over the police’s handling of her first accident that they asked to meet with Lombardo and the officers involved. Metro agreed to a meeting but neither Lombardo nor the officers involved attended it.
Did Lombardo not care about the concerns of the family or was he derelict in his duties? Or both?
