Maricopa County prosecutors have filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty against an Arizona grandmother and her husband in connection with the death of her 11-year-old grandson in the couple’s Scottsdale hotel room.

Stephanie M. Davis (DOB: 5/1970) and Thomas J. Desharnais (DOB: 9/1988) if the defendants are convicted of First-Degree Murder.

On February 07, 2022, a Maricopa County Grand Jury indicted Stephanie M. Davis, age 52, and Davis and Thomas J. Desharnais, age 34, on 11 felony counts, including first-degree murder, child abuse, and tampering with evidence.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, the charges stem from events that occurred between August 1, 2019 and January 30, 2022 where it is alleged that Davis and Deharnais inflicted bodily harm in an especially heinous or depraved manner to a minor under their care.

“The mortally wounded child, later identified as Chaskah Davis Smith, was transported to a local hospital by Emergency Medical Services personnel. There, doctors attempted to resuscitate him, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The medical staff reportedly told investigators that the boy sustained “significant injuries” that were the likely cause of his death,” according to Law And Crime.
