The former University of Arizona graduate student convicted of murdering a professor on campus has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the Associated Press reported.
The former student, Murad Dervish, shot and killed Thomas Meixner, the head of the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, in October 2022. Earlier that year, Dervish had been banned from the university and later expelled for conflicts with his professors over a low grade.
Dervish’s lawyer argued that his client was in the midst of a psychotic episode when he killed Meixner and had pushed for the charge of second-degree murder.
