A 10-year-old boy was badly injured in an attack by a dog and the animal blamed for the attack was shot in the leg when Greeley police say it charged an officer.

Greeley police said after the attack Friday, animal control officers approached the dog, described as a tan-white pit bull. Someone then let the dog into a home and didn’t answer the door when officers knocked, according to a statement by the Greeley Police Department.

Animal control officers and police officers returned to the home Saturday and contacted the dog’s owner, Margaret Trujillo, 46. They told Trujillo the dog would be impounded due to the attack on the boy, who had to have stitches. Officer asked Trujillo to secure her dog so they could take it to a shelter.

Police said when Trujillo went into her home, the dog got loose, ran outside and then charged at a police officer. The officer drew his gun and fired twice at the dog, which was hit in a back leg and ran away.

The dog was eventually caught and taken to an emergency veterinary hospital. Police said the animal will survive.

Trujillo was given a citation for possession of a dangerous animal and animal at large, police said.
