La CROSSE — U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan warned there’s more riding on Wisconsin for Dems than any other state as the party tries to hang onto its slim congressional majority and key statewide seats.

The Town of Vermont Dem said the party must hold onto the 3rd Congressional District and beat U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Oshkosh to at least keep its four-seat House majority and gain an edge in the near evenly divided Senate. Pocan also said keeping Dem AG Josh Kaul in his seat will keep corporate interests out of the Department of Justice. He added if Gov. Tony Evers is not reelected, “Wisconsin’s gerrymandered Legislature will make it so that no Democrat can fairly win Wisconsin’s electoral votes ever again.”

Pocan said any of the Republican candidates “would be awful.”

“Your choices are: Lieutenant governor for Scott Walker, a couple of rich guys wanting to buy a title and a state legislator that’s so extreme, even the GOP had to punish his behavior,” he said. “Wow, in 2022 who needs ‘Comedy Central’ when you have the Republican Party.”

He also said it’s important for U.S. Senate candidates to focus on beating Johnson rather than beating each other up ahead of the primary to gain, or at least hold onto, some Dem advantage in the chamber. And Pocan in his speech spearheaded the attack on Johnson.

“I once tweeted that Ron Johnson was dumb as a box of rocks,” he said. “That was wrong of me, and I do apologize to the rocks.”

Pocan said Johnson’s staffer’s attempt to hand Vice President Pence a slate of fake electors, rhetoric about COVID-19 vaccines being dangerous, alternative treatments for COVID-19 and advocacy for a tax cut that financially benefitted him show he is out of touch with Wisconsinites.

He also stressed the national importance of winning the 3rd CD after U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, announced he would not run for reelection earlier this year.

“If we want to hold the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, we must hold on to Ron Kind’s 3rd Congressional District,” he said.
