Pittsburgh Winery has been a Strip District staple for many years with many delicious bottles of wine poured over that time.
But for those who want a bit more, you’ll do well to look at the events in Pittsburgh Winery’s cellar as they also have one stellar music venue with a great lineup throughout the year!
Wine and music? We’re in.
Pittsburgh’s Premier Winery
Pittsburgh Winery in the Strip District is one of the original wineries in Pittsburgh and takes a bit of a different approach to winemaking.
As you likely expect, Pittsburgh (and the Strip District) is not home to too many grape vines, and indigenous grapes to the region are often not the kind we like to have in a glass. So Pittsburgh Winery took a bit of a different approach and every season they bring in grapes from notable wine regions- particularly in California and Chile.
So instead of finding wines like Concord, Niagara, or fruit wines that you may expect at other regional wineries, you’ll find locally made Zinfandel, Malbec, and Petite Syrah to name a few.
Grapes grown in stellar regions for vineyards, with local winemaking expertise? Well, that is a perfect combo!
Going beyond the grapes, the bar program at Pittsburgh Winery is pretty robust and has a robust draft and can program focusing on locally made beers, so whether you are visiting for wine or beer, you have some great options here.
But while we could be perfectly content with a glass of wine at Pittsburgh Winery, this one has gone above and beyond with a stellar venue for live music in their cellar!
Be Sure to Take in a Show at Pittsburgh Winery
One of our favorite parts about Pittsburgh Winery has less to do with the wine and everything to do with the venue itself.
On the main level, you have a welcoming tasting room for the winery for those who are looking for a glass, but in the cellar, you get the full Pittsburgh Winery experience- a music venue!
In a way, we’d almost go as far as saying this is the highlight of Pittsburgh Winery as the cellar venue is nothing short of impressive.
The stage here spans the back wall and is adorned with wine barrels for decor. There are not one, but two bars (one with beer taps, both with wine), plus a limited food menu from DiAnoia’s during our show, and guests can either order at the bar or directly at the table with QR codes.
Various tables are spread throughout, including small two-tops in the front, high-tops in the back, monster banquet-style tables at the sides, and so on. This bit is important to keep in mind if only because most shows at Pittsburgh Winery seem to be general admission- first come, first served.
We arrived at our sold-out show about 30 minutes before the start time and were pretty surprised to see the venue almost completely full at that point. The only available tables that were left were towards the back and, admittedly, had slightly obstructed views. While that one was on us for arriving late, it is a good reminder that if you have a general admission ticket, go early for the best seat selection for type and view.
As such, whether you’re going to Pittsburgh Winery for a show, wine, or perhaps a bit of both, you really can have a great time here.
Pittsburgh Winery is located at 2809 Penn Avenue in the Strip District.
