PITTSBORO, Ind. – The Pittsboro Town Council approved a plan to rezone hundreds of acres of farmland to make room for a data center.
The town’s Advisory Planning Commission had already approved the proposal in a 4-1 vote last month. On Tuesday night, the Town Council granted its approval in a 5-0 vote.
The measure involves 625 acres earmarked for agricultural use. The council granted the request to rezone it for industrial warehouse use.
The area includes land west of County Road 500 East between County Road 850 North and County Road 1000 North.
With the rezoning request approved, the next steps include developing site plans for approval, obtaining easement for infrastructure needs and determining tax incentives, among other considerations.
According to the rezoning petition, the data center would employ about 100 people. The petitioner, Vantage Data Centers, estimated the impact on traffic would be minimal and didn’t foresee any “adverse effect” on property values.
