Glenview police are advising caution after a resident reported they lost almost $100,000 to a phone scammer.

On July 30 a resident of the 1700 block of Wildberry Drive reported speaking with someone they believed was from “Apple Support,” police reports show. The caller told the victim there were issues with the victim’s computer and took bank login information. During the conversation, a wire transfer of $99,992.92 was completed, reports said.

“Advice regarding incidents such as those would be to avoid and ignore any unsolicited contacts or requests by someone claiming to be with a specific company, especially relating to financial matters,” said Glenview Sgt. Joseph Curtis. “If someone is overly concerned, they can cease that contact/phone call and directly contact their service company/financial institution to verify the legitimacy of the original ‘claim’ or information.”

“Companies typically will not be requesting personally/financially sensitive information via telephone, especially with wiring electronic funds or purchasing gift cards,” he explained.
