Gurnee police used pepper spray and called for reinforcements from other departments to break up a fight between two groups Monday at the Six Flags Great America theme park.

Six people, including three juveniles, were taken into custody following the fight, which happened around 7:15 p.m. Witnesses told police that two groups of people began fighting near the front entrance to the park, and that the altercation then spilled into a parking lot.

Police already on hand at the park were able to intervene in the fight, but had difficulty getting the groups to leave. A Gurnee officer released pepper spray to disperse what police described as a “disruptive crowd.”

As fighting continued, Gurnee police requested aid from surrounding police agencies, and Lake County sheriff’s officers, Zion and Waukegan police, as well as additional Gurnee officers responded to help disperse the crowd.

Four youths ages 14-17 from LaPorte, Indiana, were taken into custody along with a 16-year-old from North Chicago and an 18-year-old Zion resident. Three of the LaPorte residents were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Three Gurnee officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries; a fourth went to a hospital and was released Monday night.

Representatives from Six Flags did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
