A woman was fatally hit by a car in San Jose while walking outside of a crosswalk early Monday morning, San Jose police said.
Officers responded just after 4:30 a.m. at Tully Road and Lanai Avenue where a man driving a blue Honda coupe struck a pedestrian walking north on Lanai Avenue, the department said.
After the collision, the driver stayed in the area and complied with law enforcement, police said. The woman sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital, SJPD said.
The Santa Clara County Coroner’s office has not released the identity of the pedestrian.
SJPD said this is the 10th pedestrian death this year, the 12th fatal collision and the 13th traffic death. The department told SFGATE that 32 pedestrians died last year in San Jose.
The number of pedestrian deaths in San Jose is down compared to this time last year, according to data from the city’s Department of Transportation. There were 17 reported pedestrian deaths as of May 1, 2022, Nicole Ortega, a spokesperson for the department told SFGATE.
Ortega said the transportation department is planning improvements for Tully Road, where Monday’s crash occurred, including upgraded crosswalks at the intersections of Lanai Avenue and Alvin Avenue, King Road and Quimby Road. She said other improvements will include new traffic signals, bike lanes, curb extensions and restriped traffic lanes.
The construction for road improvements will start in August 2023, Ortega said. “The Department of Transportation is saddened to hear about the pedestrian fatality that took place on Tully Road and Lanai Avenue on the morning of May 1. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones,” the department said in a statement to SFGATE. “To make our streets safer for people who walk, roll, bike, and take public transit, the Department has over 200 traffic safety projects planned for 2023.”
