Paris Olympics 2024 Day 9 Highlights: World champion Noah Lyles roared to victory in 9.79 seconds to claim the Men’s 100m gold. Meanwhile,  Indian hockey star Amit Rohidas was handed an one-match ban and he will miss the semifinal clash. Rohidas was shown a straight red card during the quarterfinal against Great Britain, which India won after shootout. Novak Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz to clinch the gold medal in the tennis men’s singles event. Lakshya Sen lost his badminton men’s singles semifinal against Viktor Axelsen but will take part in the bronze medal match. Coming to boxing, Lovlina Borgohain missed out on a medal.     Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the women’s Olympic high jump in Paris on Sunday. The world champion and world record holder managed a best of 2.00 metres to win on countback from Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers. Another Australian, Eleanor Patterson, claimed joint bronze with another Ukrainian, Iryna Gerashchenko, both on 1.95m.

    Paris Olympics 2024 LIVE: Big upset in athletics

    US sprinter Noah Lyles suffered a second straight slow start Sunday, beaten into second in his 100m semi-final at the Paris Olympics. After labouring through his heat with a sluggish start, Lyles was again slowest off the blocks in the semi-final, coming second behind Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, who clocked a season’s best 9.81sec. The shock 100m winner in Tokyo, Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, also scraped through to the final at 1950GMT, where Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson will start as fastest qualifier after notching 9.80sec.

    Great Britain goalkeeper Ollie Payne had his Ipad removed from the pitch during the tense penalty shoot-out against India after it emerged that he was using the device to consult notes before facing each penalty. After a few minutes of confusion about what was happening in that corner of the pitch, the gadget was handed over to the Great Britain assistant coach. While it made no difference to India’s shooting, as skipper Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay and Rajkumar Pal scored from their attempts, Great Britain fluffed both shots after the incident to crash out of the tournament.

    World record holder Pan Zhanle led China to gold in the men’s Olympic 4x100m medley relay final Sunday ahead of the United States and France. The Chinese team of Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang, Sun Jiajun and Pan touched in 3min 27.46sec with America second in 3:28.01 and the French third in 3:28.38.

    Veteran Swedish sprint star Sarah Sjoestroem powered to the women’s Olympic 50m freestyle gold on Sunday to go with her 100m title. The 30-year-old, at her fifth Olympics, hit the wall first in 23.71sec. Australia’s Meg Harris (23.97) was second and China’s Zhang Yufei (24.20) third. It was only Sjoestroem’s third career Olympic gold medal, compared to the 14 she has won at world championships.

    American Bobby Finke smashed the world record time as he defended his Olympic title in the men’s 1500m freestyle on Sunday, with Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri taking silver and Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen bronze. Finke, who led from the outset, set a new world best time of 14:30.67 breaking the previous best of 14:31.02 set by China’s Sun Yang in London in 2012.
