SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A lot of us will be spending the next few days getting ready for Thanksgiving; buying all kinds of food and trimmings.

But for some in our community, a Thanksgiving turkey dinner isn’t always possible.

But a big donation Thursday will help those who are less fortunate get a nice hot turkey dinner this coming holiday.

These aren’t your typical box lunches, but they’ll go a long way in helping feed a lot of people.

“This year we are happy to provide 61 turkeys, which is 10 more than last year,” Wild Turkey Federation committee member Ron Schauer said.

“We will put these maybe on top here,” Schauer said.

Thursday members of the Wild Turkey Federation delivered the birds to The Banquet in Sioux Falls.

“We will use about 48 turkeys on Thanksgiving,” Food Service Manager Renee Giese said.

The others that don’t get used this Thanksgiving will be saved in order to feed guests for the rest of the year, including the Christmas holiday.

“You get a good feeling it’s something more people need to do, because sometimes you and I kind of take holiday seasons with a nice hot turkey meal for granted and there’s a lot of people who are out there struggling for whatever reason and they just can’t provide a good meal and this is a way The Banquet can help those people out,” Schauer said.

Without this big donation, The Banquet would have to look elsewhere to feed its guests.

“Well we would have to order them in and that would cost us some money, so it’s really nice they donate all this protein for our guests to enjoy on Thanksgiving,” Giese said.

This is the 15th year the Wild Turkey Federation has stepped up to help The Banquet, because as these bags say ‘turkey hunters care.’

If you’d like to donate yourself, The Banquet says they can always use turkeys and hams.
