SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Police say speeding and street racing continues to be a problem on Sioux Falls streets.
They say speeding is a city-wide problem and that any road not under construction has a chance to see street racing.
Despite multiple attempts to slow down drivers by the Sioux Falls Police Department, a lot of people still haven’t gotten the message.
“We continue to get complaints for speed and racing in the city of Sioux Falls, Lincoln County, Minnehaha County,” Sgt. Joel Dalton of the Sioux Falls Police Department said.
Police say any nice paved roadway will probably have street racing. A few examples include 12th Street, 57th Street and South Veterans Parkway.
In a speed saturation patrol in April, officers gave out almost 200 tickets. That number didn’t go down much in the most recent patrol on May 3rd.
“We had, again, a large turnout of law enforcement working on top of their normal scheduled duties, and we had 27 officers partake in the saturation from multiple agencies. We had over 180 citations issued and arrests well into the twenties,” Dalton said.
However, officers did notice something unusual.
“Most of the officers said it was still very productive, but they felt the town was quiet once several people saw the amount of manpower that was on the streets,” Dalton said.
That’s because drivers are starting to band together.
“These groups will text and coordinate through different social medias and say, ‘Hey, the cops are out. We won’t be going out tonight.’ Then, the groups are significantly subdued,” Dalton said.
Dalton says at least five drivers were going more than 25 miles per hour over the speed limit during the latest patrol. He says a couple more streets that see racing include Foss Avenue and Marion Road.
