In April 2019, Singh’s wife Shalinderjit Kaur, her parents, Haikikut Singh Pannag and Parmjit Kaur and Parmjit’s Sister Amarjit Kaur were found dead inside a West Chester apartment. They had been shot a total of 18 timesSingh called 911 that night, saying he found his family members on the floor bleeding.Weeks after the murders, with his three children by his side, Singh helped lead a march for justice around West Chester.Then in July of that year, Singh was arrested in Connecticut.Singh has maintained his innocence, and, during jury selection, Judge Greg Howard reminded potential jurors, as Singh sat there Monday, he is innocent.”A person is presumed innocent unless and until the state of Ohio proves his guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” Howard said.Howard also told people in the jury pool that he understands sympathy is a common human emotion.”However, the law and your oath as jurors require you to disregard sympathy and not to permit it to influence judgment and verdict,” Howard said.About 300 people were sent jury questionnaires for this case. Some were excused from the pool for various reasons such as medical issues, financial strains and travel plans.A few others were excused because of their unwavering views on the death penalty, as this is a capital murder case. Jury selection will resume Tuesday.Prior to the start of jury selection, there was a motions hearing where prosecutors mentioned a potential motive for the first time.They called the relationship Singh had with this father-in-law “hostile” and said the relationship got even worse in the months leading up to the murders because of money and a land sale in India.Prosecutors also mentioned an affair Singh was allegedly having with a woman in Indiana. That woman could be called to testify.
