GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — Two are injured, including a Grant County Sheriff’s Department officer, after a standoff shooting occurred just outside of Marion Thursday night.
In a release from Indiana State Police, deputies from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 3000 block of E. County Road 450 N after receiving reports of an individual threatening to harm another person.
When deputies arrived on the scene, just before 7 p.m., they instructed those inside the home to come outside. Moments later a man identified as 52-year-old Glenn A. Smock of Marion exited the home armed with a shotgun. Smock shot at the deputies, hitting one. In response deputies at the scene returned fire, striking Smock.
The suspect then retreated inside, where he barricaded himself, shortly after he exited the home and was taken into custody.
Smock received medical treatment at the scene and was airlifted to an area hospital for further treatment.
The deputy was taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and released.
The suspect and officers’ exact conditions are unclear.
The deputy will be placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office following an officer-involved shooting.
WANE 15 crew at the scene said they saw a helicopter and heavy police presence staged at the Hart’s Celebration Center, located at 3031 E 450 N, in Marion.
A Facebook live on the Grant County’s Sheriff’s Office page, Sheriff Del Garcia initially explained that an officer-involved shooting had occurred, just before 7 p.m. Del Garcia said that one of their officers was injured, but “he is okay.”
Del Garcia also explained that the suspect was also shot, and the team “attended to them medically.”
Indiana State Police is leading the investigation alongside the Grant County Prosecutors Office.
The investigation is still ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.
