The village of Northfield announced that Deputy Chief Michael Hutensky, a 24-year veteran of the police department, has been appointed as police chief.

Hutensky was selected as the top candidate from a group of over 20 applicants, according to a news release from the village.

Hutensky began his career with Northfield as a patrol officer
on October 1, 2000, and was promoted to corporal five years later. In 2016, he was promoted to sergeant, and five years later he was appointed Deputy Chief of Police.

Hutensky has been serving as the Acting Chief of Police since May 2024.

A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Hutensky holds a degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science from the University of Illinois Chicago.

According to the village, Hutensky is well versed in the functional areas of the police department and has been serving in an administrative capacity for three years.

“Mike has consistently demonstrated his aptitude for being chief,” stated Village Manager Patrick Brennan.

The Village Board will recognize Chief Hutensky, and the promotion of Corporal Tim Coffee to sergeant, during their regular board meeting on Jan. 21.

“I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve as the next Chief of Police in the Village of Northfield,” Hutensky said. “I am looking forward to continuing to work with our exceptional team of officers to serve the residents of Northfield. I am grateful for the support of my fellow officers, the village staff, and the residents of Northfield.”
