‘I’m at a loss for words’: NFL player steps in to help fan pay for grandfather’s funeral
A Houston family began fundraising to cover their loved one’s funeral until an NFL player stepped in to help. Jennifer Simpson told KPRC that they lost her grandfather, Jerry Roderick Sr., about a month ago. “He was a great man and always helping people. He would give you the shirt off his back, his last dollar, his last penny,” Simpson said. The family started a bake sale and were raising money on several social media platforms to raise money to cover a funeral for Roderick. “We have been out busting our butt doing whatever we can,” Simpson said. “We didn’t have any money coming into it, no life insurance, no Social Security, nothing coming into it.”Simpson then posted her pair of JJ Watt women’s edition Reebok shoes and jersey for sale on Twitter. Then, Watt responded. “Don’t sell your shoes and jersey, we’ll help with the funeral,” Watt’s response says. “I’m sorry for your loss.” Simpson said she was overwhelmed by Watt’s tweet and the family is grateful that they’ll be able to lay Roderick to rest.”For someone that doesn’t even know me, doesn’t even know my family to be so giving and so caring to help us, I’m at a loss for words,” she said. “I just love what JJ does on and off the field.”
