Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — As people ring in the new year, gyms are starting to fill up as many kick off their New Year’s Resolutions, and getting in shape tends to be the most popular goal.

“One of my resolutions was to make the changes that are going to get me to where I want to be. So if I say I want my body to be healthier, but I don’t come to the Y, then I’m not going to have that.” YMCA Member Shirley Sutherland Said

The YMCA offers classes and activities for all ages and abilities, all aimed at improving fitness.

“Fit is how you can function, do your day-to-day activities and still have energy left over to do what you truly enjoy to do. So you’re not just nose to the grindstone all the time. So we want to make it fun, we want you to be able to stick with it, because consistency is key,” YMCA Group Exercise Coordinator Nicole Craig said.

From the weight room, to the open gyms for sports, as well as organized classes, the YMCA has something for everyone.

“And so you can find which one works for you but I love this class, I love the instructor and the music and everything. It’s a really great way to start your morning,” Sutherland said.

Fitness instructors with the organization want people to take small steps towards their goal, as consistency is key.

“A lot of folks make the mistake of going all in and then that’s what happens on quitters Friday. Like 10 days later, people are like, ahh this is impossible, I can’t do it. So pick one thing, master that or get close to mastering that and then add on to something else,” Craig said.

These instructors also want to push everyone on their fitness journey to make it past what is known as Quitters Day, which is January 10th. This is the day most people quit their resolutions.
