Investigators have released new information about the decomposed body found in late March near Truckee.

In a Wednesday update, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office revealed several details about the deceased. The agency believes the remains, which were initially discovered off Interstate 80 near Farad Road, are those of a Caucasian woman who was between 30 and 70 years old. It estimates that the person was between 5-foot-1 and 5-foot-6 and had medium-length brown hair.

The person may have died between 2022 and 2023 and possibly had a tattoo on her torso, though investigators said it was “not identifiable.”

Overall, the sheriff’s office wrote, “Preliminary findings at this stage of the testing are minimal.”

The remains were first located March 27 after someone called the sheriff’s office around 6:30 p.m. and reported “severely decomposed human remains,” officials said.

Nevada County sheriff’s deputies, county detectives and officers from the California Highway Patrol arrived on the scene and were able to confirm the remains were human. They secured the scene overnight and returned the next day to continue investigating. The FBI Evidence Response Team, an anthropologist from the Cal State Chico Human Identification Lab and the Nevada County Search and Rescue Evidence Team have also offered support.

The sheriff’s office said Wednesday that DNA analysis results are still pending but may help identify the woman.
