NEW CASTLE, Ind. — Police arrested a man at a New Castle apartment complex on Wednesday morning after he reportedly stabbed a police officer before being hit by a police car and a Taser.

At around 9:19 a.m. on Wednesday, officers with the New Castle Police Department responded to the Vine Street Apartment Complex after officials were told that a man possibly armed with a knife was trying to force his way into an apartment, according to a news release from the department.

When officers arrived on scene, they saw a man, identified as 36-year-old Broc Sidwell, walking through the apartment complex’s parking lot. Sidwell then reportedly approached the officer, eventually brandished a knife and attacked him. The officer was stabbed in the right bicep.

Another officer on scene reportedly saw the stabbing and struck Sidwell with his police car “at low speed.” The release said that Sidwell was pushed further away from the officer who was stabbed and fled from the scene.

When other officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly confronted Sidwell. The release said that Sidwell refused commands to drop the knife and was seen ingesting a substance that was later determined to be methamphetamine as he was walking away.

Officers followed Sidwell for several blocks, the release said. Officials said that Sidwell continued to refuse to drop his knife, which led officers to deploy a Taser against him.

Sidwell was taken into custody and eventually transported to a hospital due to the Taser deployment and from ingesting the suspected methamphetamine. The release said Sidwell was later released back to police custody.

The officer who was stabbed was also transported to the hospital. The release said his injuries were non-life threatening; he’s expected to make a full recovery.

The New Castle Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident. Sidwell is currently being held in the Henry County Jail on preliminary charges.
