GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood resident helped rescue a mother and her daughter early Friday evening after throwing a rope to pull the pair from icy water.
According to the Greenwood Fire Department, first responders were called around 5:04 p.m. to the area of Winterwood Drive to conduct a water rescue. GFD reported that a 50-year-old woman had fallen through the ice in an attempt to recover her dog from a partially frozen pond.
GFD said preliminary information indicated that the woman’s adult daughter had arrived at the scene to try and assist but she also fell into the icy cold water.
A third neighbor eventually managed to pull the two women toward the edge of the water after they latched onto a rope that had been thrown to help pull them to safety. GFD confirmed the dog suffered no injuries. At one point, the two women were 30 to 40 feet away from the shore.
Greenwood police soon arrived and helped both women out of the water. They were taken to an ambulance for a medical check and transported to area hospitals in stable condition, GFD said.
The women spent approximately between 5 and 10 minutes in the water.
After the two women were rescued and warming up inside the battalion chief’s vehicle, firefighters conducted a perimeter search of the pond and found no additional victims.
GFD urged citizens to stay away from icy surfaces during cold weather.
