MANILA, Philippines—Jose Rizal University head coach Louie Gonzalez has found his preferred brand of defense that is working wonders for the Heavy Bombers.

Overly physical as it may seem, the Heavy Bombers will stick to hard-nosed basketball heading forward, especially since it fueled JRU to three straight victories.

“This is what we worked all throughout, this is our brand of game, playing with effort. Physicality is there but my task for them is to not leave stones unturned,” Gonzalez said after their 67-64 victory over Mapua on Friday at San Juan Arena.

The Heavy Bombers tallied 25 team fouls, including three technical fouls in the second quarter but Gonzalez made it clear he knew the line between rough playing and clean competition.

“We know the fine line between clean fouls and no foul. Every inch, I always challenge them to work. We’ll have a big problem if the opponent can still go in the closeout,” he said.

JRU tallied six team steals and only three team blocks but it limited Mapua to only 26.7 percent from the field or 20-for-75 shots made.

The Heavy Bombers also locked down the Cardinals from deep, forcing them to only four made triples out of 28 attempts.

For the head tactician, tiring opponents down the clutch is what will continue to win more games for the 3-2 team.

“Come fourth quarter, My challenge to my team is always, can they still take us on”

JRU will take on San Beda, which currently holds a 2-2 record, on Tuesday.
