SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Department of Public Safety released the names of two people involved in a fatal, two-vehicle crash from Wednesday evening in Pennington County.
According to a news release from DPS, Dustin Shawn Walz, a 44-year old male from Rapid City, was driving a 2007 Mazda 3 on Interstate 90 when he collided head on with a 2001 Ford F350.
James M. Cunningham, a 56-year-old-man also from Rapid City, was driving the Ford and sustained life threatening injuries. Walz died at the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate Walz was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane when he hit the Ford. Cunningham was traveling westbound in the same lane.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
The crash occurred at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9 on Interstate 90, two miles west of Rapid City.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary, the news release said.
