Boris Johnson has appointed Nadhim Zahawi, the former education secretary, to be the new UK chancellor after the resignation of Rishi Sunak on Tuesday.
Zahawi is a close ally of Johnson and seen a likely contender in a future leadership contest if Johnson is forced out of Downing Street.
He entered parliament in 2010 as the Conservative MP for Stratford-upon-Avon. Before entering politics, he was the founder of the polling company YouGov.
Simon Clarke, chief secretary to the Treasury, said Zahawi was “experienced, innovative, kind and capable”.
Johnson promoted Michelle Donelan, formerly universities minister, to replace Zahawi at the Department for Education.
