SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — A new rule for the road will take effect July 1.
The “Move Over” law will require drivers to slow down and be alert for any vehicle displaying flashing lights, not just law enforcement or first responders, as the previous law required.
This includes tow trucks, highway maintenance vehicles, utility crews, and Department of Transportation equipment using proper hazard lighting while on the shoulder, a news release from the Department of Public Safety said.
Here are some guides for drivers on different kinds of roads, the news release said.
On Multi-Lane Highways:
Drivers must move into the lane farthest away from the stopped vehicle, when it’s safe to do so, and pass with caution.
On Two-Lane Roads:
Drivers are required to slow down at least 300 feet in advance, and reduce speed:
- to 20 mph below the posted limit, or
- to 5 mph if the speed limit is 20 mph or less.
Drivers who fail to follow the new law can face up to $270 in fines, or worse if a crash occurs.
