The San Siro district in Milan is a key area for sports. It is home to the local football stadium and the city’s horse racing grounds. In May 2023, an agreement was signed off to begin construction on the Syre Residential complex and Via dei Rospigliosi masterplan. This immense project is designed by Studio Marco Piva. It is a prototype for efficient and sustainable living and is based on a master plan to fill an urban void.

The San Siro Urban Regeneration and Syre Residential complex features three structures dedicated to residences. Of these, one of the buildings will be dedicated specifically to social housing with 142 apartments. The buildings’ forms are smooth and curvilinear, for a sleek, modern appeal that pays homage to the organic forms found in nature. Additionally, each residential complex will adopt elements of either a classic or modern aesthetic through meticulously chosen materials and finishes.

Milan was originally a “garden city,” known for its lush green spaces. Because of this, landscaping is a key component of the project. This intervention will extend from the park, which is the heart of the project, right to the residential spaces. One of the key strategies has been to protect and conserve the tree formations found on-site. Besides protecting and caring for existing natural features, research was also done to examine the best way to integrate 111 new trees on this land. These trees include lime trees, ash trees, oaks and magnolias, as well as flowerbeds and hedging to boost biodiversity and greenery in the area.

The greenery in this project forms part of an innovative green system. This system’s key purpose is to sequester 14 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and produce nine metric tonnes of oxygen. These values are typically on par with a hectare’s-worth of greenery. Hence, the masterplan’s landscaping system is more efficient, as it uses a fraction of the space to produce a large impact. Besides absorbing CO2 and producing oxygen, the park will help mitigate the heat island effect and eliminate risks of heat pockets, particularly in the summer months.

In alignment with Milan’s history of being a garden city, the project aims to be a pulsating green heart of the city and a model for its sustainable strategies. The designers intended to make the site more enjoyable and eco-friendly by creating a balance between the natural and built environments. One such example is by creating underground parking for vehicles. This maintains the beauty of the landscape by lining the streets with greenery.

The designers maintain the luxurious aesthetic appeal by integrating ecological technologies into the buildings’ architecture. This includes specially selected cladding, materials, and systems, such as photovoltaic roofing to produce clean energy on-site. Within the apartments, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems will utilize renewable resources like geothermal energy from underground groundwater. Additionally, both internal and external walls will feature excellent thermal and acoustic insulation to help maintain comfortable interiors and minimize energy use.

Overall, through effective landscaping and innovative, integrated sustainable systems, the San Siro Urban Regeneration and Syre Residential complex will transform the developing district into a thriving, natural hub.
