Michigan coach Juwan Howard put the “mad” in March Madness during his team’s 79-66 win over Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament on Friday.
The second-year Wolverines coach was handed a double technical and ejected after appearing to talk at the Maryland bench, including Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon. The incident occurred with 10:44 left in the second half, with Michigan up 57-47 at the time; Turgeon was also assessed a technical, but was allowed to stay in the game.
Video shows Howard appearing to talk toward Maryland’s bench, causing a Terrapin player to approach the coach. Howard’s assistants eventually have to hold him back as he is seen talking back and forth with Turgeon:
Howard, Sporting News’ 2020-21 Coach of the Year, apologized after the game for losing control of his emotions. He explained the incident as trying to argue a call with a referee, at which point Turgeon said, “Don’t talk to me.” He also said Turgeon “charged” him.
Juwan adds “And he charged at me. I was raised by Chicago and when you’re charged, you defend yourself. Especially when a grown man charges at you.”

Turgeon also addressed the incident in postgame, saying it was a result of incidents in the team’s prior two meetings. He added that he discussed the issue with the Big Ten and said, if he were to have further issues with Michigan, he “wasn’t going to take it the third game.” Turgeon also said that he told Howard, “Don’t talk to me.”
“I stood up for my team. I stood up for me. . . . All I said is, ‘Don’t talk to me.'”

Regardless of Howard and Turgeon’s prior history, they likely won’t meet again in the 2020-21 season: With top-seed Michigan’s win over 8-seed Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament, the Terrapins are likely out of March Madness contention. The two coaches have all offseason to work out whatever differences they have before their teams meet again.
