Meghan McCain stands behind fellow GOP maverick Liz Cheney

Best of luck, from one Republican woman who knows what its like to lose her seat at the table to, most likely, another.

Former “The View” co-host Meghan McCain commended Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney for being a GOP maverick on a day the 56-year-old Republican finds herself pushing uphill to maintain the job she’s held since 2017.

“Liz Cheney has guts, is an original and goes against the grain and MAGA kool aid drinking group think that’s a cancer in GOP leadership,” McCain tweeted Tuesday. “She should be commended no matter what happens today.”

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was a power play in the GOP until she crossed party lines to join the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol. Crossing former President Donald Trump made her largely unpopular among Republicans, who remain loyal to the former president despite his supporters’ failed attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election during a violent uprising on Capitol Hill.

“If all you can be today is someone that bends the knee to MAGA — this party is a waste,” McCain tweeted.

McCain, the daughter of late Republican presidential nominee John McCain, left the popular ABC talk show “The View” in August 2021, after nearly three years of bickering with castmates who often took issue with her conservative viewpoints. Like her father, the 37-year-old pundit is a traditional Republican, and is no fan of Donald Trump.

She found herself attacked on Twitter Tuesday after expressing support for Cheney.

“You guys seem to forget we are the HUGE majority in the Republican Party,” tweeted one apparent Trump supporter. “It’s you who doesn’t don’t (sic) belong here, not us.”

Others made clear Cheney’s contributions to the committee examining the insurrection is why they want her out of office. One Twitter user suggested Cheney might have helped her chances had she been able to raise more cash. That person happened to be McCain’s husband and conservative commentator Ben Domenech.

“If Liz was any good at raising money she’d still have a job,” he tweeted.

While voting won’t end in Wyoming until 9 p.m. East Coast time, polling shows her opponent Harriet Hageman — a Trump-endorsed election denier — holding a commanding advantage.

There has been buzz that Cheney may consider a 2024 presidential run. She posted a photo of herself casting a ballot in Wyoming on Tuesday afternoon.

“The challenges we are facing require serious leaders who will abide by their oath and uphold the Constitution — no matter what,” she captioned that picture.

Hageman’s Twitter feed identifies the frontrunner as “someone to actually REPRESENT us.”
