The temperature is heating up across the country as we approach the Fourth of July, pushing the mercury to dangerous levels in the South ahead of the holiday.
Over 100 million people were facing excessive heat advisories throughout the country on Thursday, with heat indexes over 115 degrees being recorded in parts of the U.S. by the USA TODAY Heat Index.
With the heatwave blanketing southern U.S., here’s what you can expect the weather to look like across Mississippi this weekend.

Thursday, June 29
Thursday’s forecast shows heat indexes over 100 degrees throughout the entire state, with the highest predicted to be exceed 115 degrees. Areas that might be hit with the most extreme temperatures include:
- Jackson
- Hattiesburg
- Starkville
- Columbus
Others can expect to see heat indexes between 110 to 115 throughout the day on Thursday, including:
Friday, June 30
On Friday, more parts of the state are forecast to have heat indexes over115 degrees, with parts of southern, western and eastern Mississippi predicted to have the highest temperatures, including:
- Jackson
- Hattiesburg
- Meridian
- Columbus
- Vicksburg
The rest of the state will see heat indexes in the 110-to-115-degree range, including:
- New Albany
- Oxford
- Forest
- McComb
- Florence
Saturday, July 1
The weekend will bring slightly cooler temperatures, with the majority of the state predicated to have heat indexes between 110 to 115 degrees. An area of the state is expected to still record heat indexes above 115 degrees, including:
- Greenwood
- Magee
- Monticello
- Mendenhall
Some areas of the state may see heat indexes between 105 and 110 degrees, including:
- Natchez
- New Albany
- Oxford
- McComb
Sunday, July 2
The weekend will end with slightly cooler heat indexes, as the majority of the state is expected to experience weather in the 105-to-110-degree range.
Some areas of the state are still expected to see heat indexes between 110 to 115 degrees, including:
- Columbia
- Magee
- New Hebron
- Belzoni
- Yazoo City
