INDIANAPOLIS — Three people were injured in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis Monday night.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of East 12th Street and Chester Avenue on a report of shots fired around 10 p.m. Monday. When police arrived at the scene, they located three victims with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
IMPD reported that its officers found one of the victims, an adult male, in “very critical condition.” The man was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
One of the other two victims was a 1-year-old baby, per IMPD. The infant was transported to Riley Hospital for Children with graze wounds.
Police characterized the third victim as a female “teenager or young adult.” She is in stable condition, according to IMPD.
“Beyond frustrating, horrifying, disgusting,” IMPD Captain Mark McCardia said of the shooting during a media briefing. “As bad as it gets, there’s nothing you can say other than, ‘As bad as it gets’ when you see a baby shot.
“The child’s mother was not here when it happened, but showed up afterward. She just was, you know, hysterical, so we had to get her calmed down a little bit. She’s now going down to check on her baby.”
Law enforcement has recovered shell casings at the scene. Police believe the incident unfolded outside.
Officers do not believe the incident poses an ongoing threat to the community. IMPD reported that the shooting was likely a “targeted event.”
Police encourage those with additional information to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.
