BLACK HILLS, S.D. (KELO) –Kids are learning all aspects of putting on a play at the Black Hills Playhouse.

This week 37 campers from eighth to twelfth grade are at the Black Hills Playhouse.

“There’s an acting track and a technical theater track for the older camp. They study acting, singing, and dancing is the main focus of the acting track. The tech track, they get educated in set design, prop design,” Black Hills Playhouse Education Director Deb Workman said.

The Tech track also works with lighting, sound and costumes.

Campers enjoy three sessions per day.

“You really are working on these skills. And it’s the most efficient way to build theater skills ever. I think I became a much better singer here, a much better actor, and a much much much better dancer,” Camper Maximillian Josko said.

The camp has a no cell phone policy to help the campers connect with the camp.

“It gives them freedom. Not everything is documented out here. You can make mistakes, you can look silly, and it’s safe. It’s a really safe environment,” Workman said.

“It works because of all the people. They’re so dedicated, like the staff, the campers, and the counselors, everybody is working hard to make sure that this camp gets to be what it is at the end of the week,” Josko said.

That’s when friends and family members will get to enjoy the show.
