Many people used the freedom of remote work opportunities to move during 2021, with an estimated 20% more Americans relocating compared to 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Some of those estimated 14-23 million people landed in Las Vegas, which is one of the nation’s leading destinations for relocation, according to a report last week from the Penske truck rental company.

Las Vegas ranked second behind Houston among Penske’s top moving destinations for 2021. Phoenix was No. 3, Charlotte, N.C., No. 4 and Denver No. 5.

Since 2010, the company has used one-way truck rental data to determine its list of most popular cities for movers. It didn’t indicate the specific number of rentals.

The population in Clark County rose 16.1% to 2.2 million from 2010 to 2020, according to the 2020 census data.

Las Vegas, which ranked as Penske’s No. 1 relocation destination is 2020, is regularly part of the company’s list. Las Vegas was No. 7 in 2017 and No. 6 in 2016.

In a similar ranking by U-Haul, Nevada in 2020 ranked as the eighth most popular state for relocation using rental data from 2 million transactions. Tennessee was No.1, followed by Texas, Florida, Ohio and Arizona.

The influx of transplants has led to a housing crunch in Southern Nevada, with the median price for a single-family home a record $475,000 in April. That was up 27% from 2021. Apartment rents are also spiking, with the average reaching $1,471 a month.
