INDIANAPOLIS — Crews responded to a large fire on the west side of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.
A Wayne Township Fire Department spokesperson said crews were dispatched to Zore’s Inc. — which is located near the 1300 block of North Mickley Avenue — around 3:30 p.m. because emergency personnel received a call about a large plume of smoke in the area.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and discovered a large pile of scrap metal was on fire. Officials then doused the fire with water.
WTFD reported that attacking the fire was difficult because the blaze was on the back side of the property. For that reason, crews had to run 3,500 feet of large-diameter hoses from various hydrants around the property to the fire.
Multiple central Indiana fire agencies — including the Speedway and Pike Township Fire Departments — responded to the scene. WTFD indicated 50-60 firefighters worked on the blaze.
Zore’s Inc. operators removed heavy debris from the area to help firefighters gain access to the seat of the blaze. It took crews approximately two hours to extinguish the flames, per WTFD.
Officials reported that the fire’s smoke had not set off any toxicity meters. As precaution, however, WTFD is encouraging area residents to stay inside and turn HVAC systems off to avoid any smoke inhalation.
The Marion County Public Health Department is helping WTFD monitor the air and water surrounding the salvage yard.
According to its website, Zore’s Inc. is a metal recycling and towing company.
WTFD reported that the smoke the fire produced could be seen as far away as Johnson County. Officials indicated that nobody was injured during the incident.
