SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A landowner was cited by the Meade County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) for starting a grass fire, according to a Thursday Facebook post by MCSO.

On Thursday at approximately 10:00 a.m. (MST), the MCSO and four city fire departments and SD Game, Fish and Parks responded to a fire at 13426 207th Street.

A landowner started burning trash in a barrel when sparks ignited dry grass about 20 feet away. The area caught fire and was burning south toward other properties.

Fire crews contained the fire to about one acre and remained on the scene to ensure there was no re-ignition.

The MCSO reminds people that the Meade County Burn Ban is still in effect and the area is in extreme fire danger.

Under the county ordinance, any violator is subject to all costs including extinguishing the fire, mopping up and watching post-fire for re-ignition.
