La CROSSE — AG Josh Kaul on Saturday said the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning the right to an abortion has made women less safe and put them in a position where they’re less free than they had been for decades.

The first-term AG told the Dem state convention that public safety has been his top priority while in office, and he again vowed not to use Department of Justice resources to prosecute crimes related to the state’s 1849 abortion ban.

“Taking resources away from the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes in order to investigate and prosecute abortion would make everyone less safe,” Kaul said.

Kaul also touted DOJ initiatives including the creation of a statewide tip line for school safety threats and sexual assault kit tracking system.

Kaul criticized Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, for the Legislature’s 2020 election probe led by former Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman and called for Republicans to get on board with gun control measures.

Kaul urged party members to vote and show their support for abortion rights, democracy and equal justice under the law.

“Make no mistake, our freedoms are on the ballot in 2022,” Kaul said. “So this fall, we need to send an unmistakable message at the polls that we are not going backwards.”
