A congregation in Mississippi’s capital city is developing a complex to provide affordable housing and health care for older residents.
Pearl Street AME Church plans to tear down the old Jackson Southwest Hotel and improve the area along U.S. Highway 80 in Jackson, WAPT-TV reported. Pastor Samuel Boyd said Pearl Senior Living Community will be built on the site.
“To give them a safe haven,” Boyd said. “So many … have fallen through the cracks.”
The church is teaming up with Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health to put a clinic at the complex. The project is funded by low-income tax credits.
The community will have 74 apartments, and Boyd hopes the project will revitalize the area. Crews have started working, and construction is estimated to take about two years.
