NEW ALBANY, Ind. — A New Albany man was charged with murder after he allegedly killed a person who knocked on his window Saturday night.

According to Indiana State Police, 68-year-old Kevin Campbell was inside his residence in the 1000 block of Slate Run Road in New Albany around 5 p.m. Saturday. At that time, he heard a knock at his bedroom window.

Campbell then retrieved a rifle and headed to his home’s door. Upon opening the door, Campbell saw 41-year-old Christopher Proctor.

ISP originally reported that Proctor approached Campbell’s doorway with a sword in his hand. Upon further investigation, law enforcement determined Proctor was unarmed.

Per ISP, when Proctor approached Campbell’s home, Campbell shot him once in the chest. Proctor was pronounced dead at the scene by the Floyd County Coroner’s Office.

State police reported that Campbell waited two hours to call the New Albany Police Department. When he ultimately called NAPD, Campbell claimed he found a man dead in his yard.

Once police got to his residence, Campbell told investigators he had shot Proctor. Campbell was then detained and transported to ISP’s Sellersburg post for interviews.

Initially, Campbell was only charged with obstruction of justice, which is a Level 6 Felony.

When police determined Proctor was not armed, three additional charges were tacked onto to Campbell’s ledger:

  • Murder
  • Manslaughter, a Level 2 Felony
  • Criminal recklessness with a firearm, a Level 6 Felony

Campbell appeared in court on Monday afternoon. No additional updates have been made available on his case yet.
