SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Widespread flooding is impacting thousand of people in KELOLAND and beyond. Record rain fall flooded basements, covered roads and sent rivers out of their banks.

Devastating Flooding at McCook Lake

Far southeast South Dakota has seen some of the worst of the damage. McCook Lake, near North Sioux City, was hit especially hard. Homeowners say they are frustrated by the state’s response.

The flood waters came in so fast extra crews had to be called in to help rescue people. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue were among those aiding in the rescue missions at McCook Lake.

The state also activated what’s called the IMAT Team. It’s an acronym that stands for ‘Incident Management Assistance Team.’

Record Rainfall

The June 2024 flooding event was the result of record rain fall. Meteorologist Brian Karstens has recap of just how much rain fell and where.

Flooding in Sioux Falls

One of the most visual displays of the intense flood water could be found at Falls Park. The high water can be extremely dangerous and city officials ask everyone to use caution while viewing the Falls.

Flooding water closed down a list of parks in Sioux Falls. The city says even once the water goes down, crews have a lot of work to do before they can reopen.

The City of Sioux Falls has been working for decades to improve its flooding mitigation plan. And the parks play a big roll in keeping homes and neighborhoods safe.

The Emotional Toll

Not only is the cleanup exhausting, with the loss of homes and belongings, the flooding taking a an emotional toll too. Experts say there are a variety of things people can do to relieve that stress.

Even along the devastation, a feel good story is emerging from the floodwaters in Rock Rapids, Iowa. A prize fish trophy found its way back home after being washed away.
