INDIANAPOLIS — Mice, rats and rodents. Oh my!

According to a recent report from the pest control company Terminix, the Circle City ranked 19th in the top 50 rodent-infested cities.

The findings:

“The report identifies the cities where rats and mice are most frequently reported, highlighting ongoing challenges in urban rodent control,” Terminix said. It was generated using service data that came from over 300 of the company’s branches between Aug. 2023 and July 2024 — mostly focusing on key metro areas.

Apart from being viewed as pests, Terminix wrote in a press release that rodents can carry diseases, contaminate food and even damage residences.

Terminix’s Technical Service Manager Emory Matts, BCE, CCFS added onto this. “The more exposure rodents have to humans, the more comfortable they may become with exploring our environments, especially when they reach larger population sizes and are tight on resources,” he said.

Prevention tips:

In order to keep yourself and your home or business safe from rodents, Terminix offered the following pieces of advice.

  • Seal entry points: Gaps in walls, cracks in foundation or empty spaces around doors and windows should be closed off to prevent rodent entry.
  • Proper food storage: Food, including pet food and bird seed, should be kept in airtight containers. Make sure to also quickly and efficiently clean up crumbs and spills.
  • Declutter: Rearrange and organize storage areas. Doing so will reduce the potential for rodent nesting spots.
  • Regular garbage disposal: Throw away trash regularly, and do so in tightly-sealed bins.
